On the National Energy Strategy, the OIR report 2018 is now available.
There are calculations of the necessary interventions to achieve the National Energy Strategy’s objectives: these provide for the transition to clean energy for 55% of the energy needs by 2030.
The investments needed to exit the coal permanently in Italy and reach the target amount to almost 70 billion euros.
The National Energy Strategy aims to pursue agreements on the environmental objectives set by the Paris agreements and at the same time ensure security of supply and reduce electricity costs for households and businesses.
The proposal to achieve the goal is to definitively abandon the use of coal in power plants in favor of greater use of renewables.
According to the OIR 2018 report, however, the National Energy Strategy does not take into account that it is possible to renew existing plants also to avoid significant further land consumption.
In order to achieve the goal by 2030 of the use of 55% of renewable energies, 5 gigawatts of new installations per year including photovoltaic and wind power must be achieved, even using part of the existing park.
A result, we read in the report, far from being achieved.
“The current rate is little more than a sixth of what is required in the report – and there are no elements to believe that in this context of business as usual things can change”.
Basically, according to the report, more incisive measures are required to achieve the objective set for the National Energy Strategy, in essence to reach 5 gigawatts of green energy per year without increasing costs in the bill.
According to the report this can happen only on two conditions connected to each other.
The first: “An important and unavoidable work to modernize the existing renewable energy park”. The second: “Install over 4 gigawatts of additional power per year in the period 2018-2030, substantially in marker parity and without increasing the charges in the bill.”
The summary of the report is available in a press release version on the Agici website
