The International Computer Olympics will be held on August 4th in Azerbaijan and is the thirty-first edition of the event.

This year, for Italy, four young people are participating: Alessandro Bortolini, Fabrizio Brioni, Jakob Nogler and Federico Stazi.

They were chosen among the best Italian high school students to compete, each with their own notebook, in competitions that cover the areas of algorithmic nature.

In September 2012, Italy, which has participated in the International Computer Olympics since 2000, hosted the event limited to Italy in that of Sermione and Montichiari. In 2019, these will return to Matera and precisely from September 17th to 19th next at the IIS G.B. Pentasuglia.

What amazes someone is the fact that the pink quotas are not at all taken into consideration as regards the International Computer Olympics. Also in the previous edition and in that of 2017. Yet the history of computer science also has female protagonists. For example, Ava Lovelace Byron, daughter of Lord Byron, who developed her husband Charles Babbage’s ideas on automatic computing and won the record for computer programming: she is the first computer programmer in the world.

Even the Altavista engine is based on the intuition and work of a woman: Karen Spärck Jones who introduced the concept of Inverse Document Frequency in 1972.

This concept is a fundamental component of algorithms for deriving a text from a document index.

And Wi Fi? All “blame” by Heidi Lamarr, a Hollywood star who in the mid-1930s patented a system with a friend of composer to encode the information transmitted by radio frequencies and from there to start the research that led to the implementation of the Wi-Fi protocol. -Fi.

In short, great absentees from the International Computer Olympics, but protagonists of the Girls Geek Dinner, the social dinners among technology enthusiasts started in 2005 by Sara Blow, software engineer, who tired of never meeting other women at hi tech conferences and decided to change the things inventing one.
