The Department of Aerospace Sciences and Technologies (DAER) is the only university department in Italy entirely dedicated to aerospace studies and is based at the Politecnico di Milano.
Officially established in January 2013, it inherits an aeronautical tradition that dates back to Enrico Forlanini’s innovative experiences in the late 19th century and covers the stages of the first Aeronautics course in 1910.
In the second half of the 20th century, the Institute of Aeronautical Engineering – later the Department of Aerospace Engineering – was established at the Milan Polytechnic and grew under the guidance of Prof. Ermenegildo Preti.
Today the Department is engaged in several high-quality research fields with a main focus on flying machines (from unmanned vehicles to rotary-wing vehicles, aircraft, spacecraft but also land vehicles, boats and wind turbines).
In the message of the Director of the Department, Giuseppe Sala, Full Professor of Construction and Aerospace Structures, we read:

We are all working towards very ambitious goals. We encourage research opportunities that can improve tomorrow’s aerospace technologies, in collaboration with researchers from universities and industries around the world. We educate young people who attend our aerospace courses through modern teaching methods and through international exchanges of teachers and students. We designed our doctoral program as a high-profile international course, attended and powered by high-quality foreign students and teachers. We maintain modern and efficient laboratories and facilities, essential to support aerospace education and research. Overall, we are helping to improve the international reputation of our university.

The mission of the Department of Aerospace Sciences and Technologies is based on three elements: the importance of the aerospace sector worldwide, the profound awareness of the role of a technical university in this sector and the solid tradition in aerospace engineering.
The objectives are ambitious and aimed at achieving results in the scientific, educational and social fields.

• To preserve and develop a significant cultural heritage in the aerospace field through cutting-edge research, aimed at solving the most significant problems emerging from the international scenario, and promoting intense basic research capable of anticipating future problems.
• Develop cutting-edge technologies that allow you to play a proactive role in industrial collaborations.
• Provide students with consolidated technical-scientific skills and take care of an excellent training, preparing qualified engineers for important positions also in the many sectors related and collateral to aerospace.
• To obtain and consolidate a leadership position in the national and international aerospace community.
